The names and birthdates of the children of James and Ann Doggett are taken from Hostetler, Some Antecedents and the Posterity of Grandfather Armstead Doggett (1916). Although Mrs. Hostetler’s statements concerning the "Antecedents" are incorrect in large part, and those statements have been sometimes been repeated by later researchers, it would appear that the data concerning the "Posterity" are credible, and have been relied upon in the Armstead Doggett section of this memorandum. Mrs. Hostetler also is the author of a later book entitled Sketches Here and There Along the Way from the Year 1856 (1938). This book is most entertaining and consists of anecdotes from the childhood and early life of Mrs. Hostetler, many of which concern her father, Cary A. Doggett. This later book has not been specifically cited as a source for the genealogical data in these pages, but has been consulted to confirm data from other sources.
Another principal source relied on is the well-researched and well-documented database provided by Bruce Vance, covering Armstead Doggett and descendants, and some data has been taken from Samuel Bradlee Doggett's History of the Doggett-Daggett Family.

Family tradition, as reported in SBD and Hostetler, claims that James was a soldier of the Revolution, and died of wounds received in battle. The writer has not found any confirmation of this and questions its authenticity. It is possible that he served in the Virginia militia, but there does not seem to be any record of his service. Neiteher he nor his widow applied for or received any land bounty or pension. He was married shortly after close of the War and lived at least until 1796, when his daughter Judith, the youngest of six children, was born. Therefore it would seem that his wounds, if any, were not serious enough to be the cause of his death.
