George Doggett, probably the eldest son of Miller Doggett, was born about 1762 in Halifax County, VA. He moved with his family to what is now Tennessee, and probably married in Hawkins (later Jefferson) County, but the name of his wife has not been determined. George acquired 150 acres of land, which he sold on 3 April 1795. He then moved to what in 1803, as part of the Louisiana Purchase, became Washington County, Louisiana Territory, and in 1812, Missouri Territory, but which, before 1803, was part of French territory. George’s brothers, John, Jacob, and Isaac, also moved to what is now Missouri about the same time.
George died intestate in St. Louis, Missouri Territory, and his estate was probated in April 1822, with his sons John and Asa named as executors. From the estate documents, we can identify six children, although their order of birth is not clear. His son William had predeceased him, but the other five children were living in 1833, when his estate was distributed.
There was also a possible seventh child, Jesse. St. Louis probate records reflect administration of the estate of Jesse Doggett in 1824 by John Doggett. It would seem probable that this Jesse was another child of George who died without heirs prior to the distribution of his father’s estate.
