There is some confusion about the birthdates of the children of Zachariah and Nancy. Existing records examined by the writer, with the assistance of Sylvia Gault, include U.S. Census returns from 1830 to 1900 (where enumerations located); gravestone and cemetery records for Martin, Thomas and Silas; and death certificate and marriage record for Silas. We have concluded that the years of birth on the gravestone inscriptions for Thomas and Silas are probably incorrect, and that the one for Martin is probably correct. The census returns are inconsistent and vary in quality from census to census. The birth years listed above represent our best estimates based on all the evidence examined by us.

It should also be noted that in addition to the five sons listed above, Zachariah and Nancy had two daughters, whose names have not been discovered. One daughter was born between 1 Jun 1825 and 1 Jun 1830, and therefore probaly the oldest child. The other daughter was born between 1 Jun 1835 and 1 Jun 1840, and probably died young as she does not appear in the 1850 census return. Zachariah also had a son by his marriage to Lucy Bailey, whose name may have been William, born late 1819 or early 1820. There is another male enumerated in Zachariah's household in 1830 and 1840, born 1 Jun 1810 to 1 Jun 1815. the identity of this person is not known, but would seem to be too old to be a son, as the marriage to Lucy didn't occur until 1819. There is also another male child, born 1 Jun 1835 to 1 Jun 1840, which may be another son who died young, as he does not appear in the 1850 census.

Zachariah served two terms of service in the War of 1812. He served from 5 Aug 1813 to 19 Nov 1813 as a private in Capt. Samuel R. Combs' company, which was a part of Col. Richard M. Johnson's Regiment of Kentucky Mounted Infantry. Tbis regiment was a major part of American forces in the famous Battle of the Thames in Upper Canada (now Ontario), Canada on 5 October 1813, which resulted in a resounding American victory and the the death in battle of the Shawnee Chief Tecumseh whose forces were fighting on the side of the British. Largely as a result of this battle, and the claim that he may have personally killed Tecumseh, Col. Johnson was elected Vice-President of the United States under President Martin Van Buren. Not long after this battle, Zachariah was discharged from the militia.

He later served again in the Kentucky militia, serving as a substitute for Asa Caywood, who had been drafted for service. His original enlistment, in Capt. Samuel Gooden's company of Col. Porter's 16th Kentucky Militia Regiment, was for one month ending 9 October 1814, but the unit continued in service for six months until 10 March 1815, when the company was discharged in Upper Canada from further service.

For his service in the War, Zachariah was awarded a warrant for 160 acres of bounty land, and a small pension, which his widow continued to receive after his death. He sold his land warrant to a William B. Roberts, who located and received a patent for 160 acres in Johnson County, Missouri.

The gravestone of David and Mary shows a marriage date of 23 Dec 1876. This is inconsistent with the 1900 Census which shows 24 years of marriage, as of June 1 1900. Their oldest child was born 17 Mar 1877, a date which is consistent with other evidence. Therefore, we believe that the gravestone entry is in error and that the correct marriage date is 23 Dec 1875.

According to one source, Thomas served in the military in World War I and when he returned after the war he found that his wife and infant child had died and then disappeared and was never heard from again. This is consistent with information on Minnie May Corbin's death certificate which shows her married to Thomas Z. Corbin and that she died in November 1918 from the influenza epidemic.

For his service in the War, Zachariah was awarded a warrant for 160 acres of bounty land, and a small pension, which his widow continued to receive after his death. He sold his land warrant to a William B. Roberts, who located and received a patent for 160 acres in Johnson County, Missouri.
