Much of the information concerning Spencer F. Doggett and his descendants was supplied to the writer many years ago by the late Ralph Pommert, a great-grandson of Spencer. This information includes copies of vital statistics pages from family bibles which appear to have belonged to Spencer’s wife Sarah and to his son James Franklin Doggett, which supplied the vital clues to the ancestry of Spencer.Not all of the entries in Sarah’s bible are contemporaneous, and it appears that the entries were made after Spencer’s death in 1847. Ralph Pommert also supplied data based on family information, some of which may not be completely reliable in some instances. Ralph also supplied a copy of a letter written in 1955 by a great-grandaughter of Spencer to Ralph Pommert’s sister, Mildred, (hereinafter called "1955 letter), which is the source of much of the family information collected by Ralph and contributed to the writer. Ralph's information was supplemented in later years by his granddaughter, Linda Thorpe. See also Broderbudnd's World Family Tree v. 6, #1744, which I believe was submitted by Linda. Significant contributions were made by Larry Gerhardstein, particuarly with respect to James Franklin Doggett and his descendants, both by personal correspondence and through his WorldConnect database. Donna Bennett furnished most of the information about the Eckles family and descendants. Published records used include McBride's volumes of Highland County, Ohio, vital records, Ohio Civil War service records, Ohio Death Index and Washington Birth Index published on-line by Ancestry, the Social Security Death Index, WW I and WW Ii Draft Registratons, and census records from 1850 to 1930, particularly of Highland Co., Ohio.

Ora Wall's 1955 letter refers to Spencer as "Spencer Franklin." However, the writer has not seen any documentary evidence to support the middle name of "Franklin." In the above-mentioned family bible, on his tombstone, and in census and deed records, he is consistently referred to simply as "Spencer F." As his eldest son was named "James Franklin," it may well be that the attribution of "Franklin" to Spencer is correct, but as yet no proof has been found.

Spencer’s birthdate is recorded in Sarah’s bible as 18 Oct 1796. However, in the same bible his death is recorded as occurring 23 Nov 1797 at age 50 yrs, 1 mo, 5 days, which would place his birth in October 1797. The same information is found on his gravestone.

The identity of Spencer’s parents has been the subject of considerable conjecture. However, the writer believes that circumstantial evidence clearly supports the conclusion that his parents, known to be James and Elizabeth Doggett, are the the persons identified above.

Spencer and his wife Sarah R. Brown ( a distant cousin) were married on 18 Oct 1820 in Culpeper County, Virginia, where their six oldest children were born. The 1955 letter states that Spencer "was the sheriff of the County and they lived in a house adjoining the jail." The writer has not attempted to confirm the fact of appointment as sheriff (or as constable) in the minutes of the Culpeper Court, where such appointment would be recorded.

The 1955 letter states that Spencer and family moved to Hillsboro, Ohio, in late 1831, where his three youngest children were born. This is consistent with documentary evidence. Spencer and family were enumerated in the 1830 census of Culpeper County, and there is a deed of record in Culpeper County in 1831 conveying Spencer’s interest in real property. Again, the writer has not seen the actual document. The 1850 Census returns for Highland County, Ohio, show that Spencer’s daughter Elizabeth¸ who was born 30 Jun 1831, was born in Virginia, and his son William, who was born 16 Mar 1837, was born in Ohio. His daughter Lucy Ann was born in 1835 and died in 1838, so her birthplace does not appear in the 1850 Census. However, there is a four year gap between Elizabeth and Lucy Ann, which is most consistent with a move to Ohio during that period.

James served twice in the Union Army during the Civil War. He first served a three month term as a musician in Co. A, 2nd Ohio Volunteer Infantry from 20 May to 31 Jul 1861. That unit was ordered to Washington as part of the Union forces defending the capitol, where it took part in the First Battle of Bull RUn. He later enlisted on 9 Aug 1862 for three years as a Private in Co. A., 89th Ohio Volunteers and was soon promoted on 10 Sep 1862 to Communications Sergeant in the regimental staff. The regiment participated in numerous battles in Tennessee, Georgia and North Carolina, and was with Sherman's army on the March to the Sea, and was mustered out 7 Jun 1865.

John Doggett served in the Union Army along with his older brother James. They enlisted at the outset of the Civil War in Company A, 2nd Ohio Volunteers, for three months. He was promoted to Prinicpal Musician and was mustered out at the expiration of the regiment's term of service on 31 Jul 1861. The regiment participated in the defense of Washington, DC, and in the Battle of Bull Run. John's widow, Catherine applied for and received in 1904 a pension based on his service.
